Percy – The Ponderous Pelican
8x10" Acrylic on MDF Panel
Percy is not in a hurry. Ever.
While the rest of the flock flaps about in a frenzy, Percy stands motionless at the water’s edge - part statue, part sage. With eyes that seem to scan other dimensions and a posture that suggests both elegance and stubborn refusal to move, Percy is the contemplative type. A thinker. A watcher. A beak-based philosopher with time to spare.
But don’t be fooled by the stillness. Behind those solemn stares and perfectly composed poses lies a mind in motion. Is Percy contemplating the migration of clouds? The physics of splash trajectories? Or simply working out if he can get away with snatching someone else’s fish without causing a scene? Only Percy knows, and he’s not telling.
Percy’s day often involves:
Staring into the middle distance like he’s solving a riddle
Slowly pacing two steps, then pausing again for dramatic effect
Being mistaken for a waterfront sculpture (and not correcting anyone)
Executing swift, shockingly accurate snack-theft when no one’s watching
Australian pelicans like Percy are equipped with incredible bills - long, strong and capable of holding up to 13 litres of water. But Percy uses his mostly for silent judgement, gentle scooping and the occasional meal stolen with surgical precision. Dining, for him, is not a race. It’s a patient, strategic event.
This portrait captures Percy mid-ponder - elegant in monochrome, with soft floral tones cradling the grand sweep of his beak. He may appear relaxed, but make no mistake: calculations are underway. Something is always being considered. Whether it’s the next big thought… or the next little fish.
Percy invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and think deeply… before possibly nicking your lunch.
Dream it, Paint it!
